Colonoscopy

Women and Men from Vancouver and all across B.C. choose False Healthcare Centre because of board-certified surgeons Dr. Charles Scudamore, Dr. Gregory Polyakov and Dr. Donald Cooke. Our team of General surgeons has years of experience and excellence in performing colonoscopy surgeries.

A colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure designed to allow your doctor to see inside the colon and rectum. The procedure can be used to detect inflamed tissue, ulcers, and abnormal or cancerous growths. A colonoscopy can detect early signs of colorectal cancer and can help doctors diagnose unexplained changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bleeding, and weight loss related to the colon.

What to Expect

During a colonoscopy, patients lie on their left side on an examination table. In most cases, a light sedative will be used to ensure your comfort, though a deeper sedation may be required. Your doctor will then carefully feed the colonoscope through the rectum and into the colon.

A tiny video camera mounted on the colonoscope transmits images to a monitor, allowing your surgeon to closely examine the lining of the colon. Air may be pumped into the colon through the endoscope in order to inflate the colon and produce a clearer image.

Your surgeon may perform biopsies, stop bleeding, and remove abnormal growths, depending on what they find during the colonoscopy. For these procedures, special tools that slide through the endoscope are used. Once the procedure is finished your surgeon will gently remove the colonoscope.

How to Prepare

The process of preparation for a colonoscopy is called a bowel prep and is designed to ensure that all solids cleared from the gastrointestinal tract. A combination of over the counter laxatives and a clear liquid diet, starting 2-3 days before the procedure, is often recommended.

gI had a colonoscopy June 2007 and screamed through it.I felt 5 or 6 cuts across the top, and later asked the sureon what the cutting pains were . He said probably the mesentery. I was left with an anal fissure that did not heal for 2 years, when his associate manipulated something anally, and it did crunck and make noises, pushing me firmly, and 2 weeks later the fissure was healed. .. after 2 years of all this distortion to my body, with much pain trying to walk… I was left with more.. a large umbilical hernia , and a large and heavy apron, which makes me waddle when I walk..causing very painful lower back. cannot stand without pain.. It also raised my bladder and bent urethra.(angled). along with the umbilical hernia..If I have the umbilical hernia (umbilicus 3 inched lower than before) will the bladder and angled urethra go back where it belongs again ? Or will I need surgery for the urethra and bladder… can this be ?Do I have the umbilical repair first to see if the others go back, or do the bladder repair first ? I also need a reconstructive surgeon to repair the abdominal wall and the very large diastasis which was there before the colonoscopy, and was the reason I was sent to the surgeon who performed the colonoscopy. Now I have these added repairs to d, and have no surgeon as yet to repair the first one.. the diastasis which is the main problem with the abdominal wall killing me slowly.. with low oxygen and insomnia and an invalid..
He said the reason I screamed in pain during the colonoscopy , was probably the mesentery.. and did not say why, except he thought I might have IBS because I had been abused in the past.. and the only advice was to see a church lady or nurse councillor.. for the IBS. He does not see any other problems. As he went into the colonoscopy room with me, he said he would straighten out that twisted stomach.. like the one my dad had repaired at age 74. I wrote to him later when I was not getting any help from anyone for the repair of all these rips and ruptures.. and would be grateful if he could find me the appropriate surgeon with this experience . I am daily in constant pains from these displacements and added ruptures.. when I went in with the very large diastasis to be evaluated and repaired. I had no cancer risks..
I have no family doctor who can tell me which procedure should be done first. I am booked for a cystoscopic exam, but feel it is simply a matter of getting them back in place, and maybe if the umbilical was in place and repaired, the urethra and bladder will go back into position, as they were disturbed during the colonoscopy along with the new umbilical hernia.. I had no hernia there, and it moved down 3 inches after colonoscopy. I do not know if previous adhesions may have been ripped and caused the attachment of an old bladder lift detach ???? I can only imagine… I have no such knowledge, but am certain the 6 sharp cuts I felt were probably the umbilical hernia created.. and pulling the bladder out of position. .. Do some of these surgeries have some attachment to the Mesentery ? Why was it in such pain?
I need the best reconstructive surgeon I can find to repair what is said to be the abdominal wall painfully squeezing across the bra line over ribs, choking air out of me, and disturbing the heart and lung functions.. I experience difficulty if eating more than 1/2 cup of any food. yet am starving all the time looking for something good in small size.. Who would you see first ? I a trying to get them all to do an evaluation, and then decide which is the first step.
No one seems to be able to tell me this.. just sending me for tests again, and the colonoscopy sure scared me so I fear any procedure unless advised by the best surgeon how it will help the way we attack this unusual problem.. No medical personnel will help me find a surgeon with such experience… ..Should i write to the College of physicians for advice ? I am getting worse with more pain and less walking, and am very upset with the quality of care, and the loss of quality of life since colonoscopy… 4 years of suffering and searching… very exhausted.. I am almost 80 now, and think after 80 they will not want to operate… I do not want to remain alive in this terrible condition… yet am as healthy as can be otherwise.. needing to continue landscaping , like before the diastasis occurred…. Where are the real doctors and surgeons gone ? No one can help me…”sorry can’t help you”.. they all say.. Is this medicine ? I worked 30 years in hospital microbiology , and public health labs, and never seen such ignorance, and lack of support..
What is this New System ? General surgeons should be trained to do more.. they do little except remove cancers and gall bladders.. need more training…in order to prevent overfilling of chronic care beds….as we are now…
I sincerely hope and pray I can meet the special surgeon (s) I need.

Like many of the questions here I have same line of questioning.
What is the cost of a colonoscopy?
How soon can it be done and what is the procedure for arranging to have one done at your facility?
