Hernia Repair

Women and Men from Vancouver and all across B.C. choose False Healthcare Centre because of board-certified surgeons Dr. Charles Scudamore, Dr. Gregory Polyakov and Dr. Donald Cooke. Our team of General surgeons has years of experience and excellence in performing hernia repair surgeries.

Hernia repair is one of the most common surgical procedures performed and is designed to treat a hernia: the protrusion of organs or tissue through an abnormal opening in the body. Most hernias occur when a piece of intestine slips through a weakness in the abdominal wall, but can also develop around the naval, in the groin, or anywhere you may have had a surgical incision. Your doctor may recommend either Open hernia repair surgery or a laparoscopic method.

What to Expect

For open hernia repair surgery, an incision is made in the groin area. If the hernia is bulging out of the abdominal wall, the bulge is pushed back into place and the weak spot is repaired by sewing the edges of healthy muscle tissue together. Patches of synthetic material may also be sewn over the weakened area in the abdominal wall in order to reduce the tension on the weakened abdominal wall and reduce the risk a hernia will recur.

During laparoscopic hernia repair a small incision is made in or just below the belly button. The abdomen is then inflated with carbon dioxide to separate the abdominal organs so the surgeon can see the organs and the inside of the abdominal cavity more clearly in order to avoid injuring them. Your surgeon then inserts a laparoscope through the incision to provide video of the hernia. and a mesh patch is affixed behind the abdominal muscle wall.

How to Prepare

In preparation for your procedure be required to avoid eating the night before your surgery. Your doctor may also advise you to temporarily stop taking certain medications and supplements that may increase your risk of bleeding.

What is the approoxiamate cost of a laparoscopic hernia repair procedure ? My son has been told it could take anywhere from 3 months to 6 months to get the operation done in the present medical queue, He is in a great deal of discomfort at the present time and the time frame of 3 to 6 months is simply to long. He has a sports hernia.

Like many of the posters here, I am interested in knowing the cost of hernia repair. I understand that there are variables etc but knowing the range would help. Also, does MSP contribute e to the cost?

I have an umbilical hernia that has been slowly growing the last 6 years and is now about the size of half a grape.

Is there any medical reason that it can’t be left?

Hi, I would also like to know what is the cost for a hernia operation? Also what type of anesthetic is used? Is epidural anesthesia possible in some cases?

      Hello Olga,
For Hernia Repair surgery, general anesthesia is used in most cases. Sometimes a patient will require an epidural. Rosina will be contacting you to answer any additional questions you may have.

I have a 16 yr old son who has an umbilical cord hernia. we saw a specialist in abby today and were told it would take up to 3 months before he got it repaired. He was told it was small enough that it would only need a couple of stitches and no mesh would be necessary. what would the timing be in your center to get this done? what would the cost be? He is an elite hockey player and had to cancel 2 Junior A camps already. If we have to wait 3 months plus recoup time he will miss out on his chances this year and that might be the potential end to his future in hockey.
    please respond.
    Daniella.

I have small hernia in the left groin area. I have been told to expect a 3 to 6 month wait period to have the surgery done under the BC Medical plan. Could you please provide a cost estimate to have the Surgery done at False Creek HealthCare. Thank you.

I am also interested in knowing the cost of the laparoscopic hernia repair in your clinic. I am told by my doctor in Oregon that I have two minor and incipient hernias, one on either side, and that the cost of the operation here is $17000, which is beyond my means. Thanks,

    Neal
