Knee pain can often result from a ruptured ligament, torn cartilage or certain medical conditions, including arthritis, gout and infection. To diagnose the cause of knee pain, a surgical diagnostic procedure known as knee arthroscopy is often used.
A knee arthroscopy is designed to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of knee pain and injury. With the arthroscope, your surgeon can look directly into your knee allowing them to make a more accurate diagnosis and decide on the best treatment option for you.
Reasons for Knee Arthroscopy
A knee arthroscopy may be recommended for these knee problems:
- A torn meniscus: cartilage that cushions the space between the bones in the knee.
- A damaged anterior cruciate or posterior cruciate ligament.
- Inflamed or damaged lining of the knee joint.
- Misalignment of the kneecap.
- Small pieces of broken cartilage in the knee joint
- Removal of Baker’s cyst: a fluid-filled, swelling behind the knee.
- Certain fractures of the bones of the knee.
What to Expect
A knee arthroscopy procedure can take up to over an hour, depending on how much work your surgeon needs to do inside your knee joint. A sterile fluid will be pumped into your joint to help produce a clearer picture and then a surgeon inserts a fibre-optic video camera, or arthroscope, through a small incision which transmits the view inside the joint to a video monitor.
Your surgeon will examine your knee joint and, if necessary, repair any damage or remove material that interferes with movement or causes pain in your knee. Afterwards, the fluid is drained out and the incisions are closed with stitches or adhesive strips. A dressing and a bandage is then wrapped around the knee.
The length of your recovery will depend on the severity of the injuries treated.

Torn miniscus in one area as identified by MRI. How much would the surgery costs? An estimate would be fine.
I am interested in knee surgury. Miniscus is torn in 3 places, according to an MRI.
Can you give me an extimate of the costs for surgery and related expenses?
I am 75 and my doctor has recommended knee surgery. There is a huge wsaiting list. what is the cost per knee? One is much worse than the other
I have been told I require a full knee replacement. I am not even on awaiting list and I am told it will take up to a year to get the operation after I am able to get on the waiting list. Does your clinic do knee replacements? Have you heard of Makoplasty, a new technology that minimizes the knee replacement process.
Hello,
Firstly I am considered to be a big man 6ft 2in. and overweight at 380 lbs. I’m focused on dropping the pounds as I realize the obvious effect it can have on the knee carrying that load. However , I have increasing pain and declining mobility in my left Knee. Over the last year I have been to a Orthodontic specialist twice. The first time, after X rays and an MRI, the Dr told me it could be difficult with a big knee ( not sure what he meant) he prescribed a pain killer (I think) – I read the side effects and decided not to take them ( a little stubborn 60 yr old ) sorry to say I really had no idea what the problem was with my knee or what ever was going to be the next step? The pain then increased to the point that a few months later I returned to the Doctor and was determined to get a better understanding of my situation. Unfortunately, I’m still not much wiser (it’s easier pulling teeth than getting information from my specialist) , i had updated X rays and I’m now going to have Arthroscopic Surgery ” to clean up and scrape Athritis”/? – No dates have been scheduled . Apparently it will take 6-8 weeks to get a schedule date for the surgery that may take place “about” 6 months later. I have a big family vacation planned for March 2013, and would love to be able to walk without pain by then. This is an inquiry into the time frame and costs at your clinic ? Thank You
How much is the cost for an acl reconstruction??? I am thinking of having a surgery but I am not a Canadian (university this year )?
was wondering what the cost would be for cartilage knee surgery
I have a complete tear of the acl ligament. No other damage has been detected on the MRI. Please advise on cost and timelines. I am a resident of Alberta.
Thanks
I have a left knee that was injured skiing in 2008 MRI showed 50% ACL tear still continued activities, 2009 I reinjured it MRI showed bucket Medial Meniscus which was cut out and continued activities. Now in 2010 on my right knee I jumped and fell with all of my weight on my leg, MRI showed complete tear MCL, ACL, anterior horn of the meniscus and large contusion to the bone. When I finally saw the surgeon two months later he could see a very small amount of blood flow in the MCL and felt that I would get better. Well a year later and one more injury because I tripped, I have absolutley no stability at all and the right knee will tear and buckle if I so much as turn my leg while standing with out my brace. On manipulation before the doctor’s could not pop in and out now it does.I realize that because I am 55 that the success rate is lower but I am really active and love to skii (snow and water) hike, jog, bike and just generally be healthy and active. What would you recommend, I do not want to stop being active and now my left knee and hip are causing pain because it is taking all of the unbalanced weight.
