Menorrhagia, or excessive menstrual bleeding, affects 22 percent of healthy women.
Uterine balloon therapy is a new outpatient procedure to reduce excessive menstrual bleeding. Unlike a hysterectomy, which is a common treatment for menorrhagia involving the removal of the entire uterus, this procedure affects only the lining of the uterus through the application of heat.
What to Expect
The procedure is a minimally invasive treatment that typically takes under a half-hour and provides a cure for excessive bleeding in 85 percent of women. No surgical incisions are required and patients are discharged the same day. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within 2-3 days. Uterine balloon therapy is now the recommended choice of treatment for patients who have not found relief through drug therapy and do not desire to undergo a hysterectomy.
