Dr. O.N.M Panton was born on the Cayman Islands where he completed elementary, secondary, and a post-secondary education studies. He pursued his medical education at the University of the West Indies, completing his training in 1977, going on to a year of internship followed by a year of surgical residency at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.

He enrolled in the Surgical Residency Program of the University of British Columbia in 1979 completing surgical residency in 1984.

Dr. Panton practiced as a community surgeon joining the General Surgery staff at the University of British Columbia Hospital in 1999 becoming the Interim Surgical Director of that site in 2002. He was cross appointed at the Vancouver Acute Hospital in 2003 and has been the Head of the Division of General Surgery at both hospital sites since 2003. He was appointed Head of the Division of General Surgery at the University of British Columbia in July of 2008.

Dr. Panton was trained to perform diagnostic laparoscopy as a Surgical Resident and embraced these techniques which served him well as a community surgeon. At the beginning of the laparoscopic revolution in the late 1980s, he was quick to acquire training working with Dr. Eddie Joe Reddick in Nashville in September of 1990, subsequently introducing laparoscopic cholecystectomy and appendectomy in his practice as a community surgeon in 1991. In November of 1991 he worked with the late Dr. Carl Zucker and his colleagues in Baltimore doing an advanced laparoscopic course, and in July of 1992 he introduced laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, laparoscopic colectomy and laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication in his surgical practice. Later that year he also introduced laparoscopic bile duct exploration and splenectomy.

In 1993 he began to perform laparoscopic rectal cancer surgery. Shortly after joining the staff at The University of British Columbia Hospital he introduced laparoscopic adrenalectomy, splenectomy, colorectal resections, abdominal wall reconstruction, inguinal hernia repair and Nissen fundoplication at that site. He subsequently performed laparoscopic gastric surgery and trans-anal endoscopic rectal surgery at the Vancouver General Hospital.

In addition to clinical and administrative responsibilities, he continues to participate in the Undergraduate and Post-graduate Education Programs at The University of British Columbia. For the last 20 years he has supported his colleagues at multiple sites at the University of the West Indies as Visiting Professor. He has contributed equipment to developing their laparoscopic surgery services and more recently to the establishment of a surgical skills training centre at the Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica. He was appointed Honorary Visiting Professor.

He has also donated equipment to the Cayman Islands Hospital in Georgetown, Grand Cayman, and delivered a substantial amount of medical supplies and surgical equipment to provide relief for the people of the Cayman Islands after the Islands were ravaged by Hurricane Ivan.

He was invited to the Sultan Qaboos University in Oman in June 2015 and 2016 as External Examiner for the Final Medical Exams.

He and his wife Rhona have two sons. The eldest, Giles, an actor, is married to Jocelyn. The youngest, Boyd, PhD, a mechanical engineer, is engaged to Cyrille.

I just had a routine colonoscopy done by Dr. Panton. He comes across as perhaps a shy individual, so he speaks softly but he will explain things you don’t even ask for. He was very kind as I was quite anxious. I appreciate that in a specialist – it’s rare. He is also a leader in his field of non-invasive surgery. I would highly recommend Dr. Panton.

n an operation related to a ‘non-Hodgkins lymphoma’ diagnosis, I was having my spleen removed by Dr. Panton. Everything went well. I have been waiting for my next operation with him, a wait which is attributable to prioritization and prior patients. This next operation is unrelated to the other, and I think I have done well to wait, because of his expertise in general surgery. I can’t adequately describe my upcoming surgery, so will not confuse you with a futile attempt. I trust Neely and will be done with all this in a week and a half : )

He did my husband’s hernia and he was very good. The first time we came for the operation they sent us home because my husband’s pacemaker needed to have a new battery and they thought the surgery would be risky. He is very conscientious. We appreciated that. My husband had the pacemaker fixed and when the Dr. did the surgery everything went well. In fact after my husband had the operation done he went and built an entire deck on our garage. He has felt fine ever since and had been in extreme pain before. So we like this doctor a lot.
